In Western Medicine
In Western Medicine, the uterus is normally held in place inside the pelvis with various muscles, tissue, and ligaments. If these muscles weaken through age, childbirth or other reasons the uterus may slowly displace downwards collapsing inwards and into the vagina, causing the condition known as a prolapsed uterus.
- Cervix falls to pubis symphysis
- Cervix drops into the vaginal canal
- Cervix drops far enough and can be seen at the vaginal opening
- Uterus exits to external (procidentia, the entire uterus falls through the vagina due to extreme weakness of all supporting ligaments and muscle
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)
In TCM, there are several factors can lead to prolapsed uterus.
Deficiency of Qi – The Lungs contain Qi and also control the suction of body parts such as pores, skins, muscles and organs etc. When the Lungs are weak and unable to regulate Blood and Qi then these parts will open (Pores), relax (Muscles) and prolapse (Uterus). This is usually related to not eating enough, not eating enough nutrition rich quality food or a nutrition deficiency due to digestive problems. It causes a dull pain that comes and goes and is accompanied by a feeling of fatigue and a poor digestive system.
Deficiency of Kidney – this affects the fluid balance in the body and disturbs the bladder function which leads to frequent urination. It causes aches and pains in the lower back and the knees, a low libido and urinary incontinence or frequency.
Damp heat – Dampness can be thought of as the condition of "high humidity" inside the body. Symptoms can include a feeling of heaviness, swelling or water retention, distended abdomen, phlegm discharge, nodular masses, loose bowels and turbidity of fluids. Individuals with a dampness condition often have sluggish energy and easily gain weight which then affects the organs to stay in place and muscles starting to sag and prolapse.
Different individuals may experience different symptoms. The typical symptoms for this condition are:
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in your pelvis
- Feeling something is coming out of the vagina
- Painful sexual intercourse
- Difficulty with urination or bowel movement
- Discomfort when walking
- Loss of urine during cough or sneeze
