Background

In Western Medicine

A hangover is an unpleasant symptom that can develop after drinking too much alcohol. As if feeling sick isn't bad enough, frequent hangovers are also associated with poor performance and conflict at work.  As a general rule, the more alcohol you drink, the more likely you are to have a hangover the next day. There's no magic formula to tell you how much you can safely drink and still avoid a hangover. Most hangovers go away on their own, though they can last up to 24 hours.

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)

Whether a person is drunk or not depends on the concentration of ethanol in the blood. When the concentration of ethanol in the blood is between 0.05 and 0.1%, the person begins to get hazy and drunk; when it reaches 0.3%, the person will lose his voice and stagger the gait, which is typically considered drunk; if it reaches 0.7%, people will die. The ethanol tolerance differs between individuals due to differences in gastrointestinal absorption capacity and liver metabolic capacity.

Alcohol negatively affects many parts of the body, including liver, kidneys and stomach. Excessive drinking, which is more than four drinks daily, can affect your health. It damages your liver and kidney and can even lead to acute kidney failure.

TCM recommends to take a mixture of natural herbs to help and strengthen the kidneys and detoxify the liver to improve the body’s ability to endure hypoxia and eliminate the toxins in the blood. The stomach is the first organ that gets impacted when drinking, from the alcohol damaging the gastric mucosal. This upsets the stomach and may cause vomiting and nausea. In TCM some of the ingredients in this herbal formula are believed to improve the stomach’s function and protect the gastric mucosa which helps recovering from a hangover and to counteract the damage done by the alcohol.
