In Western Medicine
There are two conditions, focal hyperhidrosis and generalized hyperhidrosis.
In focal hyperhidrosis, also called primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is localized. In generalized hyperhidrosis, or secondary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating affects the entire body. The cause of primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis is unknown in the majority of cases but western science suspects it to be related to genetic defects. Secondary hyperhidrosis is believed to be caused by underlying health condition, such as obesity, gout, menopause, tumor, mercury poisoning, diabetes mellitus, or hyperthyroidism. Treatments options could be iontophorese, botox injections, anticholinergic drugs, or surgical in severe cases.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)
According to TCM, typical disharmony patterns that result in sweaty hands and feet are either wind cold and wind heat which affect the function of the organs. A prolonged condition may lead to Lung, Stomach and Spleen, and also Kidney dysfunction. There are four disharmony patterns that could lead to sweaty hands and feet: damp heat in the spleen and stomach, coldness in the spleen and stomach, yin deficiency in the heart and kidney and insufficiency of heart yang. The spleen system controls the muscles and the limbs; the four extremities must be nourished by the nutrient essence which is transformed and transported by the spleen. When the spleen and stomach fail in its transportation and transformation functions, it will lead to abnormal distribution of the body fluids and excessive sweat will arise from the hands and feet.
Different individuals may experience different symptoms, including:
- Clammy or wet palms
- Clammy or wet soles
