In Western Medicine
The exact cause of mouth ulcers or cold sores is still unknown and varies from person to person. The common virus called herpes simplex causes mouth ulcers. They can spread from person to person through close contact, such as kissing. There are some common causes and several factors that may aggravate mouth ulcers like hormonal changes during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause. Medication, stress, anxiety, braces and apparatus rubbing against the mouth and gums may cause mouth ulcers too. Cold sores or mouth ulcers are red, fluid-filled blisters near the mouth or on other areas of the face. It may appear on the nose, lips or even inside of the mouth. It can persist for two weeks and longer.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)
TCM is more concerned about the internal causes and oral ulcer is a disease caused by the triple burners. There are three types of ulcers, they can be caused by the upper burner which relates to the heat, the middle burner which relates to the cold, or lower burner which relates to deficiency. They can act separately or all at the same time. TCM classifies oral ulcer as an upper gastrointestinal inflammation, gastrointestinal malnutrition or a decrease of the immune system. Oral ulcers often occur in the spring and autumn season, due to seasonal changes. The frequent occurrence of oral ulcers can be an indication of a dysfunction in the immune system.
Different individuals may experience different symptoms, including:
- First, Tingling and itching occurs about 24 hours before blisters erupt
- Second, Fluid-filled blisters appear
- Third, The blisters burst, ooze, and form painful sores
- Fourth, The sores dry out and scab over causing itching and cracking
- Fifth, The scab falls off and the cold sore heals
